The New York Jets would have a totally different outlook this year had they gone with another choice this offseason.
Before the Jets made a blockbuster deal for Aaron Rodgers, they reportedly had their eyes on another quarterback.
Negotiations during the Aaron Rodgers trade discussions stalled at one point during the offseason, so the Jets hit the panic button and called the Rams to see if there was interest in making a deal for Matthew Stafford, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
“Sources say that when the Jets’ pursuit of Rodgers lagged—due to lack of clarity on what Rodgers wanted and pre-darkness retreat concerns about whether he would even play in 2023—the Jets called the Rams to see if Matthew Stafford would be available in a trade. Talks between New York and Los Angeles were brief, simple, and to the point.”
As two sources explained to Rapoport, the talks between the two teams were nothing more than exploratory in nature. New York wasn’t the only team that inquired about Stafford’s possible availability, as several other teams reached out to the Rams.
Stafford will be back under center in Week 1 for the Los Angeles Rams against the Seattle Seahawks while Rodgers will make his Jets debut in prime time on Monday night at MetLife Stadium.

Last season, Stafford only played in nine games due to a spinal cord contusion and concussion. He threw for 2,087 yards, 10 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
Stafford is two years removed from leading the Rams to the franchise’s first Super Bowl win as a Los Angeles-based team.
