The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport is reporting that Matt Patricia could become the Denver Broncos defensive coordinator ahead of next season.
The Broncos are heading into a make-or-break campaign after hiring Sean Payton as their head coach this year. And they hope he can get Russell Wilson clicking after the quarterback’s terrible output last term.
The team is keen on shoring up at every position and could bring Patricia in as their DC, with Rapoport revealing the 48-year-old was interviewed by the AFC outfit this Wednesday.
Patricia worked as a senior football advisor and offensive line coach for the New England Patriots last season, and it showed as they failed to get it going, saw Mac Jones take a step back, and failed to make the playoffs.
His expertise as a defensive coach is unquestionable, however. The Patriots’ defense was formidable when he functioned as the Pats’ DC from 2012-2017 and it got him hired as the Detroit Lions head coach in 2018, though he was fired during the 2020 season after going 13-29-1.
The Broncos are also considering former Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan and Arizona Cardinals DC Vance Joseph. The latter is thought to also be a potential candidate to replace Jonathan Gannon in Philadelphia following his appointment as the Cards head coach this month.
