The New England Patriots have waived former Carolina Panthers’ quarterback and 2022 third-round pick from their roster.
Per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, Corral was waived off the exempt/left squad list. With Corral no longer on the roster, the Patriots are now carrying two signal-callers in Mac Jones and another 2022 draftee in Bailey Zappe.
Corral was waived by the Panthers last month, and the Patriots picked him up on Aug. 31. For reasons that weren’t revealed publicly, Corral was absent from the Patriots’ practice on Sept. 8 — two days before their season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles.
There was concern about Corral’s well-being during his unexplained absence, as the 24-year-old and former Ole Miss star had been open about his struggles with alcoholism and depression. Last Monday, head coach Bill Belichick stated that it was “a personal matter” for Corral.
Corral unfortunately missed his entire rookie year in 2022 after suffering a Lisfranc injury. Considering that Carolina went with three different starters (Baker Mayfield, P.J. Walker and Sam Darnold), it’s safe to say that Corral would have seen some playing time if he hadn’t gotten injured.
