Senior ESPN writer Todd McShay has made some interesting early predictions for the 2024 NFL Draft right on the heels of last week’s mega event. In his early mock draft for next year’s event, he’s tipping the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to make a blockbuster trade that would see them land a premium quarterback with the first overall pick.
McShay reckons the Arizona Cardinals could control draft affairs following the trading of their third overall pick to the Houston Texans — as he predicts the Cards and Texans will finish at the bottom of the league standings.
The Cardinals, however, are unlikely to go for a QB in 2024 and could continue to collect draft capital from QB-needy outfits, such as the Bucs.
Tampa Bay will head into 2023/24 with Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask as their quarterbacks but, as one might imagine, Mayfield can’t be anything more than a stopgap option, though he could prove otherwise. The signal-caller had the worst QBR last season, yet he did manage to salvage his career with some impressive performances after moving to the Los Angeles Rams.
As for Trask, the second-round pick from 2021 has thrown a total of nine passes in the NFL.
As such, McShay is tipping them to move up in the draft to select Caleb Williams out of USC first overall. Williams threw for 4,537 yards, 42 touchdowns, and five interceptions last season and had a QBR rating of 87.5. He’s also drawn comparisons to reigning league MVP Patrick Mahomes.

The 21-year-old is thought to be worth a trade-up to any team given his impressive passing skills and ability to make things happen on the fly when plays don’t go according to plan.
This is still quite some way off, but the predictions are being made anyway.
