Mason Rudolph entered Week 16 as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ starter at quarterback and the fan base loved him during that game.
Rudolph got a hero’s applause in Pittsburgh as the team took on the Bengals on Saturday.
That almost did not happen.
Rudolph was in the midst of pursuing a career in commercial real estate if he hadn’t gotten a spot on an NFL roster this season.
He made the revelation after he led the Steelers to a 34-11 victory last Saturday against Cincinnati in his first start in more than two years.
“I’d be lying if I said I didn’t work on my resume a little bit,” Rudolph said Wednesday.
He stated this was the first time he had updated it since his freshman year at Oklahoma State. Before that, he had zero reasons to do it. However, when free agency hit and he did not throw a single pass last year, thoughts began to creep in that he might be finished in the league.

“I didn’t know what was going to happen, but I wanted to have a Plan B and think about a Plan B a bit,” he said. “Your whole life you’re doing one thing and your head is down and you’re just ‘I’m not going to think about it’. I had a little bit of time to talk to my family about what I might be interested in and I still had a lot of confidence that I was going to get an opportunity somewhere…”
It turned out to be with the Steelers, who brought Rudolph back for one more season to be the No. 3 quarterback.
He would finally get a shot to start and took advantage of it as he tossed for 290 yards passing and two touchdowns.
There are major playoff implications on the line as the Seattle Seahawks play host to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday and Rudolph is slated to play in that game as well.
Rudolph hasn’t won consecutive starts since leading the Steelers to three straight wins in 2019. This would be the best time to break that streak.
