FOX analyst and three-time Super Bowl champion Mark Schlereth went off on Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for acquiring ex-San Francisco 49ers’ quarterback Trey Lance.
In a surprise move, the 49ers dealt the No. 3 pick of the 2021 NFL Draft to their longtime rivals for the low price of a fourth-round draft choice. Lance became expendable in San Fran following the rise of 2022 seventh-round pick Brock Purdy, and free agent signing Sam Darnold wound up beating out Lance for the backup job.
During a recent edition of his “Stinkin Truth” podcast (h/t Karl Rasmussen of Sports Illustrated), Schlereth ripped Jones for making the trade, even citing it as a reason why he doesn’t see the Cowboys winning the Lombardi Trophy:
“This is why the Cowboys will never win s—, because Jerry Jones can’t help himself.
You think about Jerry Jones, you’re gonna go out there and you’re gonna make a trade for a guy without talking to anybody else in your organization, Stephen Jones, your head coach Mike McCarthy, your quarterback…
Oh, they may win a bunch of regular season games because they’re talented. They’ll get in the playoffs, and they’ll s— in their helmets like they do every year.”
Jones is the only current NFL owner who also carries the general manager title for his team. Though Jones has an excellent track record at the draft (see: Dak Prescott, CeeeDee Lamb, Zack Martin, Tony Pollard, Trevon Diggs, Micah Parsons, DeMarcus Lawrence, et al), the Cowboys have consistently underachieved over the past 28 years.

Dallas hasn’t reached the NFC Championship Game since 1995, which also marks the last year they won the Super Bowl. Last season, their championship hopes ended with a playoff loss to the 49ers in the Divisional Round.
