Mark Ingram feels bad for his “running back brothers” as they have to deal with being treated like less than when it comes to the terrible running back market in the NFL. Not a lot of teams are willing to pour a ton of money into this position and it does not look like things will change on that front anytime soon.
During a recent appearance on The Herd with Colin Cowherd, the retired NFL running back discussed the “unfortunate” fact that NFL teams value star running backs less than players at other positions.
“You do have to diversfiy your game and do everything,” Ingram said while appearing on The Herd with Colin Cowherd, but at the same time, we have a player like Los Angeles Chargers Austin Ekeler who probably had the second amount of catches on his team, getting paid less than the No.2, No.3 receiver.
“So what are doing? The production hurts the running back. Running back rushes for 2,000 yards, it’s like ‘he’s not going to do it again, he’s worn down. But when a receiver catches 2,000 yards, it’s lets play him.’
Only time will tell if we will ever see running backs be great again and if they are, will teams decide to finally start paying them like they used to.
Ingram, a three-time Pro Bowler, announced his retirement from football after 12 years in the league at the end of the 2022 season. In what was his final season in the league, he logged 62 carries for 233 yards and one touchdown.
Calling it a career at age 33, Ingram will forever be remembered fondly for his time with the Saints after eight highly-productive seasons.
