Mariah Carey randomly decided to throw some not-so-subtle shade at the National Football League on Sunday by bringing up a former player.
Mariah Carey posted a tweet that reads, “Happy Colin Kaepernick Appreciation Day!” moments after their ad for social justice aired on millions of TV’s across the nation.
The commercial, sponsored by the NFL for its “Inspire Change” initiative, aired minutes before the halftime show by The Weeknd and it garnered a ton of comments as people wanted to know why they did not mention or show Colin Kaepernick.
Kaepernick first started to kneel during the National Anthem in 2016 as a way to protest police brutality and inequality towards people of color.
“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” he said at the time. “To me, this is bigger than football, and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”
The commercial states that “While our season is ending, our fight for equality is not. It takes all of us to create change and advance social justice.”

“Football is a microcosm of America- all races, religions, living, playing, competing- side by side. I pray we dedicate ourselves to be the best team we can be. Let’s choose to be for one another. To fulfill the promise of one nation. To be part of the solution. Be part of the change. To try harder. Show up. Dive in, and stay at it.”
