One Colorado man really thought he had everything going for him as he found himself with an unsuspecting woman who clearly didn’t know who was on the roster of the Denver Broncos and it cost her big time.
That Colorado man was arrested last week for allegedly claiming to be a current member of the Denver Broncos and defrauding a woman of a large sum of money, Castle Rock police announced.
James Otis Turner told the woman his name was Dante Sir Foster, but he has never played a down of professional football in his life.
Police were led to 49-year-old James Turner of Highlands Ranch. He has no affiliation with the Broncos or the NFL, police said.
“To get over $100,000 from a victim, he’s definitely crafty in what he’s doing,” said Castle Rock Police Officer Joe Cybert.
An investigation by the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office led to several women coming forward to say Turner indicated he played for the Broncos. One woman who shared her story with FOX31 said Turner approached her at a gas station.
“He was sitting in his nice car, was very well dressed and he asked, do you know who I am? I said no, I have no idea. He said I play for the Broncos. I said oh that’s cool and then he asked if I wanted to come over and meet him and if I could give him my phone number,” Anny Cristofano said.
FOX31 found multiple websites with fake articles that said Turner was a former Minnesota Viking. His fictitious name is very close to “Donte Foster” an actual wide receiver who signed with the Vikings as a free agent in 2014.
Police are concerned he may have manipulated more women.
Castle Rock police recommended Turner be charged with theft, forgery, identity theft and criminal impersonation, which are all felony charges.
