The Patriots waived rookie quarterback/receiver Malik Cunningham on Tuesday, just 10 days after signing him to their active roster. It was just fine because the young guy wouldn’t be gone for long.
The Patriots signed Cunningham, a dual-threat quarterback who can play multiple positions, as an undrafted free agent following a solid career with Louisville.
On Wednesday, ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler reported the Patriots were going to sign Malik Cunningham to their practice squad if he clears waivers today.
“Quarterback Malik Cunningham is expected to sign back to #Patriots practice squad should he clear waivers today, per sources,” Fowler wrote.
Cunningham wound up seeing six snaps in Week 6 against the Las Vegas Raiders, two at quarterback and four at receiver.
The Patriots made him a healthy scratch for last Sunday’s 29-25 win over the Bills, instead turning back to Bailey Zappe behind Mac Jones.

The Patriots, who scored their second victory over the Buffalo Bills last Sunday, visit the Miami Dolphins in Week 8. They are in fourth place in the AFC east.
Cunningham spent the previous six years at Louisville, where he took over as the starting quarterback in the program’s post-Lamar Jackson era.
He started for four seasons under head coach Scott Satterfield, finishing with 9,664 passing yards and 3,182 rushing yards.
