The NFL has added an interesting event to the Pro Bowl, with the skills competitions set to return in 2024.
The league announced that tug-of-war will be a feature at the upcoming games in Orlando, Florida, which should be of particular interest to offensive and defensive linemen as it’s been added as a means of getting them more involved given that they aren’t really needed for the flag football segment.
The competition will see five players from each conference line up with a foam pit between them in a best-of-three affair. Points won in this event will go towards the overall Pro Bowl Games championship.
Other skills competitions include precision passing, dodgeball, the kick-tac-toe kicking competition, and the gridiron gauntlet relay.
The NFL has brought A. Smith & Co. in to take charge of the skills competitions given the company’s reputation when it comes to setting up such events, having produced shows such as ‘American Ninja Warrior’ and ‘The Titan Games’.
Tackle football was removed from the Pro Bowl last season as players would opt out of the game to avoid injuries, while those who did participate tended to avoid contact. The change appears to renew interest and the league considers it a success, prompting it to keep the format.
