An early holiday gift has come for football fans: Another NFL Christmas game is on the horizon this year.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the league plans to have an NFL Christmas game on the 25th even though Xmas falls on a Wednesday this year. The league ran three games on Christmas this past season, as it fell on a Monday.
Last year’s NFL Christmas tripleheader featured the Las Vegas Raiders vs. the Kansas City Chiefs, the New York Giants vs. the Philadelphia Eagles and the Baltimore Ravens vs. the San Francisco 49ers.
As every football fan knows, NFL games on Wednesdays are extremely rare.
The last one to take place on a Wednesday was the Baltimore Ravens-Pittsburgh Steelers Week 12 contest of the 2020 season. That game had to be pushed back multiple times after the Ravens experienced a COVID-19 outbreak.

Before that, the last NFL game to be played on a Wednesday was the Dallas Cowboys-New York Giants NFL Kickoff Game in Week 1 of the 2012 season. The Cowboys-Giants game was played then instead of the Thursday because the league did not want a scheduling conflict with the 2012 Democratic National Convention.
The NBA also plays a series of games every day on Christmas. As Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team noted above, the association probably isn’t super pleased with this news.
Fifth Straight Year Of At Least One NFL Christmas Game
2024 will mark the fifth consecutive year in which football fans will be treated to at least one NFL Christmas Game.
In Week 16 of the 2020 season, the league had the New Orleans Saints host the Minnesota Vikings in the first NFL Christmas Game since 2017. A year later, the league scheduled a doubleheader, with the Green Bay Packers hosting the Cleveland Browns and the Arizona Cardinals hosting the Indianapolis Colts.
2022 featured another NFL Christmas Game tripleheader: The Miami Dolphins vs. the Green Bay Packers, the Los Angeles Rams vs. the Denver Broncos and the Arizona Cardinals vs. the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
And with Christmas falling on a Monday last year, fans got to enjoy the aforementioned tripleheader.
