It sounds as though the Houston Texans will once again be without superstar rookie C.J. Stroud for Sunday’s Week 16 home game against the Cleveland Browns.
Citing sources, ESPN’s D.J. Bien-Aime reports that Stroud is likely to miss Sunday’s game as he remains in concussion protocol. Bien-Aime added that second-stringer Case Keenum will probably start again if Stroud is out:
“Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud, who missed Sunday’s win over the Tennessee Titans and remains in the concussion protocol, is likely to miss a second straight game this coming Sunday against the Cleveland Browns, sources told ESPN.
“He should miss another game,” one source said Tuesday, adding that the Texans will continue to monitor Stroud’s progress before making a final decision.”
Stroud suffered a concussion in the Texans’ Week 14 road loss to the New York Jets and did not return. With the No. 2 pick of 2023 likely out again, the Texans added more QB insurance by signing former Jet Tim Boyle to their practice squad.
Houston (8-6) enters Week 16 in a three-way tie for first in the AFC South along with the slumping Jacksonville Jaguars and Indianapolis Colts. The Jaguars currently hold the tiebreaker because of a superior head-to-head winning percentage (1-1 against Houston, 2-0 against the Colts).
The 22-year-old Stroud has completed 62.4 percent of his pass attempts for 3,631 yards and 20 touchdowns against only five interceptions. At 8-6, the Texans have already clinched their best record since the 2019 squad that went 10-6 and en route to the AFC South division crown.
