EA Sports has finally announced the cover player for Madden NFL 25, and the identity should come as no surprise as Christian McCaffrey, the standout San Francisco 49ers running back, will be featured on the cover of the enormously famous video game when it comes out later this year.
Christian McCaffrey is the first running back to be spotlighted on the game in more than a decade. He also became the first 49ers player to grace the game’s cover in more than 25 years.
49ers fans may remember Garrison Hearst, a standout player for the team who last appeared on the cover of the annual NFL video game. He was on the cover of “Madden NFL 99,” which was released in 1998 alongside John Madden.
Christian McCaffrey is the first active RB to be on a Madden cover since Peyton Hillis for Madden NFL 12.
Prior to McCaffrey and Hillis, the last RBs to appear on the cover were Detroit Lions star RB Barry Sanders and former Minnesota Vikings star Adrian Peterson. Both of them would share the honor in 2013 for the 25th anniversary.
During the 2023 season, McCaffrey led the NFL with 1,459 rushing yards and scored 14 touchdowns. He is a certified dual threat, as he also led NFL running backs with seven receiving touchdowns while catching 67 passes for 564 yards.
