Mac Jones was benched for the second straight game last Sunday as the New England Patriots got blown out by the New Orleans Saints 34-0. Jones was 12-22 for 110 yards and two interceptions when he was pulled from the game in favor of Bailey Zappe.
Bill Belichick backed Mac Jones as the Patriots’ starting quarterback for their Week 6 game against the Raiders but it does not appear he might finish out the entire game if he starts to play badly. The third-year signal-caller has been benched in back-to-back losses that were never close, but head coach Bill Belichick and offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien have said they weren’t expecting to make any changes. However, according to a new report, changes could be on the way if Jones does not improve.
NFL Media reports that Jones is on a short leash entering Sunday, and early struggles vs. the Raiders could lead to a change under center.
Bailey Zappe has long been viewed as Jones’ backup but reports from this week state the team might go with Will Grier.
Also on the active roster, officially, is undrafted rookie Malik Cunningham.
The 28-year-old Grier spent the last two seasons with the Dallas Cowboys.

Grier signed with the Cincinnati Bengals practice squad before the start of the regular season, but was signed to the Patriots’ active roster in September. Now he could be viewed as the man today and based on his play, he could see himself starting some games.
Whatever happens, the Patriots need something better at the position.
