Mac Jones tenure with the New England Patriots are starting to get dim with each and every new report.
The situation surrounding Mac Jones and the New England Patriots has taken another surprising turn this week after reports surfaced the previous week he was shopped by Bill Belichick at the NFL combine.
Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer revealed on Monday that Jones’ behavior last season caused him to lose support within the Patriots’ building.
“Jones rankled Belichick and last year’s offensive staff with the way he handled adversity. Some of that adversity, of course, was created by Belichick’s unorthodox decision to install Matt Patricia (a defensive coach) as offensive coordinator and Joe Judge (a special teams coach) as quarterbacks coach. So there is plenty of blame to go around. Regardless of how you’d split that blame up, Jones lost support in the building with the way he managed the challenges of the season,” Breer wrote.
Back in December, Mac Jones yelled at offensive coordinator Matt Patricia during a Monday Night Football against the Arizona Cardinals. The 24-year-old waved him off after a timeout and seemingly told him to “F–k off.” This moment came after Jones was already shouting curse words in frustration and rolling his eyes at the OC.
Matt Patricia did not work out as offensive coordinator, which is why the team went out and signed Bill O’Brien, who previously held this job before parting ways and becoming head coach of the Houston Texans.

Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio stated in an earlier report that Belichick has been furious ever since finding out Jones reached out to members of Alabama’s coaching staff to seek information on how to “properly” run the offense under Patricia. NBC Sports Boston’s Tom Curran says that decision didn’t go over well with Patriots brass.
“That really pissed Bill [Belichick] off,” Curran said last week.
Belichick has refused to name Jones the starter over Bailey Zappe, who garnered a lot of praise from players on the team as well as the fan base.
“Everybody will get a chance to play. We’ll play the best players,” Belichick said when asked about a potential quarterback competition.
Jones is coming off a down year after he performed much better as a rookie. The Patriots likely would not get much for Jones after his down 2022 season. It would be much better to wait and see if Jones performs better under O’Brien before making the decision to move on. He’s under contract for at least two more seasons either way, so you might as well gather as much information as possible prior to making a move.
