Los Angeles Chargers’ superstar quarterback Justin Herbert is the latest quarterback to secure a massive contract extension worth well over $200 million.
Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Lindsay Thiry, the Chargers and Herbert have reached an agreement on a lucrative $262.5 million extension over five years. Schefter added that the deal carries $185 million in total guarantees.
Herbert is the third quarterback to have secured a mammoth extension worth over $200 million this offseason, along with Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens (five years, $260 million) and Jalen Hurts of the Philadelphia Eagles (five years, $255 million).
Per Spotrac, the $262.5 million value on Herbert’s deal is the second-largest contract in NFL history, behind only Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs (a 10-year, $450 million pact that was signed in 2020).
It’s also the eighth NFL contract to exceed the $200 million mark, all of which are quarterbacks. The other players in the $200 million club are Deshaun Watson of the Cleveland Browns, Kyler Murray of the Arizona Cardinals, Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills and Russell Wilson of the Denver Broncos.

Through his first three NFL seasons, Herbert has racked up 14,089 passing yards and 94 touchdowns. He led the Chargers to winning seasons in both 2021 and 2022, including a wild card berth in the latter year.
In short, Herbert should be worth every penny for the Chargers.
