The NFL head coach hiring cycle is now complete, with the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders making their appointments this week.
The Seahawks named Mike McDonald as their head coach this Wednesday while Dan Quinn will be taking over from Ron Rivera in Washington, with the news dropping on Thursday.
The coaching market was one of the best we’ve seen in a long time, but it also fielded lots of surprises, with the biggest coming in the form of Raheem Morris, who was hired by the Atlanta Falcons following reports that Bill Belichick was a shoo-in for the job.
Belichick now headlines a list of nine top candidates who did not get hired during the recently closed cycle following his departure from New England.
Mike Vrabel was also thought to be an attractive prospect after getting fired by the Tennessee Titans but got passed over while Pete Carroll won’t be coaching in the NFL this year after stepping into an advisory role.
Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson was also a top prospect but changed his mind and decided to remain with the team, whose defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn also makes the list. Eric Bieniemy, who left the Kansas City Chiefs so he could give himself a better opportunity, was hardly mentioned after the Commanders’ weak finish in his first campaign as their OC.
