Jared Goff, the quarterback for the Lions, is entering the final two years of a four-year, $134 million deal extension he signed while playing for the Los Angeles Rams. Although $33.5 million a season may not seem like much, it is a relative steal for an NFL quarterback.
It appears he might be in line for another deal.
Dave Birkett from The Detroit Free Press is now reporting that the Detroit Lions are trending towards giving the veteran quarterback a new contract sometime within the next fifteen months.
It certainly appears he is the long-term answer despite the team drafting another quarterback over the weekend.
Goff will be the Lions’ starter throughout 2023, barring injury. That remains true even after GM Brad Holmes selected Hendon Hooker in the third round of the 2023 NFL draft. That much would be true even if Hooker were fully healthy and not set to miss at least part of his rookie campaign as he recovers from ACL surgery.
The way Goff performed down the stretch in 2022, leading the Lions to a winning record and holding the NFL’s streak of most throws without an interception, guaranteed he would be starting in 2023.

Goff is playing for his next contract in 2023, whether that’s in Detroit or somewhere else. With this latest report, it appears it will be in the Motor City.
Hooker is a QB-in-waiting if the Lions decide Goff either isn’t the long-term answer or wants too much money. Detroit gets a year to work with Hooker and teach him while Goff leads the team.
If Goff handles that pressure from Hooker the way he did oppose defenses in Detroit’s 8-2 finish in 2022, it will set the Lions up for many years to come.
