When video surfaced showing Kareem Hunt pushing and kicking a woman at a Cleveland Hotel, it seemed like a death sentence to his career since former Baltimore Ravens RB Ray Rice ultimately lost his career after striking his then-fiance in the face while in an elevator.
Unlike Rice — Kareem is super young and extremely talented at his position, so there teams who were still interested, which is why the Cleveland Browns signed him to a contract on Monday.
One team who had an opportunity was the Detroit Lions, but Bob Quinn, Matt Patricia and company determined he wasn’t a fit for the squad. Speaking at the team’s annual members summit, Quinn confirmed that the Lions didn’t add Hunt because they didn’t feel comfortable adding him to the team.
“We consider everybody that’s available. So obviously when that player was released toward the end of the season, every team in the league had the opportunity to claim him, actually at a cheaper contract than the one he signed today. So we evaluate every player on the field and off the field, and in this case, we talked about it internally and he’s a player that we didn’t feel comfortable bringing to the Lions for numerous issues. I stand by that. That’s my word. I want good players and I want good people in this organization,” Quinn told season ticket holders, including Kyle Mansour, who shot the video and posted it on Twitter.
Having Hunt on the squad would’ve been a plus, but rookie Kerryon Johnson showed he was more than able to shoulder the load for the Detroit Lions. But, Hunt did lead the league in rushing in 2017 and his talent is why he’s getting a second shot in the league.
