An enticing trade proposal idea has the Detroit Lions sending third-year wide receiver Jameson Williams to an NFC rival.
The 23-year-old Jameson Williams was drafted 12th overall by the Lions in 2022. But he’s been limited to 18 games over his first two NFL seasons because of injuries and a suspension.
Williams missed most of his rookie year recovering from a torn ACL he suffered in the Alabama-Georgia national championship game. He served a four-game suspension in 2023 for violating the NFL’s gambling policy.
If Williams is unable to show much improvement in Detroit this year, one can only wonder if GM Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell will look at giving the former Alabama star a fresh start.
Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox proposed a massive trade idea that would see Detroit send Jameson Williams to the Carolina Panthers. This move would reunite the young wideout with former Alabama teammate and quarterback Bryce Young.
“Young won the Heisman in 2021, which was also Jameson Williams’ lone season at Alabama. He caught 79 passes for 1,572 yards and 15 touchdowns that year and went on to be drafted by the Detroit Lions in the first round…
If Williams doesn’t show the desired progress on the field, however, Detroit might listen to offers at the trade deadline. It would behoove the Panthers to at least make a pitch and try reuniting him and Young in Carolina.”

With just 18 NFL games under his belt, Williams has tallied 25 receptions for 395 yards and three touchdowns. In three playoff games, Williams hauled in six receptions for 79 yards and one touchdown.
It’s unlikely that Detroit would give up on Williams now before the 2024 season begins. But don’t be surprised if a slow start convinces Holmes to put Williams on the trade block, considering how many playmakers Detroit already has on offense.
Carolina Would Be An Ideal Landing Spot For Jameson Williams
The Panthers spent ample resources fixing up the supporting cast around Bryce Young, trading for 1,000-yard receiver Diontae Johnson before drafting WR Xavier Legette, RB Jonathan Brooks and TE Ja’Tavion Sanders.
But as Knox noted, Young and Williams formed terrific chemistry together at Alabama. Seeing how much former LSU teammates Ja’Marr Chase and Joe Burrow have flourished together in Cincinnati, the Panthers should feel motivated to make a move for Williams if the Lions decide to field trade offers.
