The New York Giants aren’t thought to be averse to trading star defensive lineman Leonard Williams as CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones is reporting that sources around the NFL believe that the player could be on the move before the deadline as long as the price is right.
The Giants are likely keen on draft picks at the moment, given that they’re holding up the rest of the NFC East with a 2-5 record. Taking their prospects when it comes to making the playoffs into consideration, it probably wouldn’t be all that surprising if they opted to move a veteran player in exchange for draft capital.
Williams was drafted out of the first round by the New York Jets in 2015 and was traded to the Giants after the Jets picked up his fifth-year option in the fourth year of his $18.6 million rookie contract.
The 29-year-old made a base salary of $14.2 million in 2019 and has been franchised tagged by the Giants on two occasions. He signed a three-year extension worth $64 million in 2021.
Williams has appeared in all seven games for NY this season, posting 20 tackles and 1.5 sacks. He will be an unrestricted free agent in 2024.
