NFL fans were not able to immediately figure out the NFL’s new patch for Thursday’s slate of Thanksgiving games.
The league has announced fresh jersey patches honoring the late John Madden which will be worn by the six teams in action on Thursday night. There will be three teams playing on the night, as opposed to one. And they will all don Madden-themed patches out of respect for the iconic coach.
Madden, who passed away at the age of 85 in 2021, was the head coach of the Oakland Raiders from 1969 -1978 before moving into broadcasting. He is still associated with Thanksgiving games as he was known for giving out turkey legs to the Player of the Game on Thanksgiving day.
It makes sense that the NFL would choose to honor him this year. But the patch itself didn’t make sense to plenty of fans on social media.

It’s John Madden alright. If you look long enough, you’ll see him.
Madden is also credited for accidentally popularizing a hybrid cross between turkey, duck, and chicken called the turducken after trying it during a Thanksgiving show.
Aside from the patches, coins honoring the Hall of Famer will be used for the coin tosses. Thursday’s slate will feature Lions vs. Packers, Cowboys vs. Commanders, and 49ers vs. Seahawks.
