The Washington Commanders appear to have a firm idea on what they will do with the second overall selection in next month’s 2024 NFL Draft.
Washington holds the No. 2 selection, behind the Chicago Bears. According to Jeff Howe of The Athletic, rival NFL executives think the Commanders remain “high on” North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye, long viewed as the front-runner to go second overall:
“There’s belief by rival team executives the Washington Commanders are high on Maye and that he should remain the favorite as the second pick.”
Unless they trade the pick, the Bears will presumably deal 2021 first-round pick Justin Fields and use the No.1 pick on USC quarterback Caleb Williams. The 2022 Heisman Trophy has been the overwhelming favorite to go first overall for several months now.
Williams, Maye and LSU’s Jayden Daniels are the consensus top-three quarterbacks in this year’s draft. The New England Patriots hold the No. 3 pick and will presumably draft whichever of those three remains when it’s their time to select.
In his final season of college football, Maye completed 63.3 percent of his pass attempts for 3,608 yards, 24 touchdowns and nine interceptions to go along with nine rushing scores.
