The Los Angeles Chargers’ upcoming home game against the Jacksonville Jaguars is just two days away, and the AFC West club still doesn’t know if they’ll have their star quarterback for the late afternoon tilt.
Herbert suffered a fracture to his rib cartilage in the Chargers’ Week 2 road loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday Night Football. Despite being in obvious extreme pain, Herbert managed to finish the game.
On Friday, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reported that Herbert didn’t throw in practice, and that backup Chase Daniel was working the first team reps. With Herbert’s status up in the air, the oddsmakers have considerably shifted the game odds.
As noted by Matthew Berry of NBC Sports, the Chargers went from a seven-point favorite at home to only a 3.5-point favorite.
The Chargers opened the 2022 season as a trendy pick to make the playoffs and even win the Super Bowl. As long as Herbert is the starting quarterback, the Chargers will be the favorites in home games more often than not.

But if Herbert doesn’t play on Sunday, the Jaguars’ chances of moving to 2-1 on the year improve greatly. Trevor Lawrence and company are coming off a dominating 24-0 victory over the Indianapolis Colts at home, and they sit atop the AFC South entering Week 3.
Through the Chargers’ first two games, Herbert completed 72.0 percent of his pass attempts for 613 yards, six touchdowns and one interception. He threw for 5,014 yards and 38 touchdown last season, adding 302 yards on the ground as well as three rushing scores.
The Chargers defeated the Las Vegas Raiders back in Week 1 by a final score of 24-19 before suffering their first loss of the season against Kansas City.
