The Las Vegas Raiders are reported to have made attempts to get this year’s No. 1 pick from the Chicago Bears but were put off by the asking price.
The team has since made Jimmy Garoppolo tits starting quarterback, signing him to a three-year deal. But they were well aware of the fact that they had enough cap space to sign a top-market free agent.
The Raiders were also armed with the No. 7 pick in this year’s draft, as well as several others spread over the next several years.
According to a report from The Athletic, they explored the possibility of trading up to the No. 1 spot this offseason. And, while a formal offer was never made, they did find out what the Bears were looking for in exchange.
The Bears let Vegas know they were after 2023’s first and second-round picks, two future first-rounders, and another second-rounder.
The publication cites sources who also told them the Raiders balked at the asking price. The Bears ended up trading the pick to the Carolina Panthers in exchange for the latter’s first and second-round picks for this year, plus their first-round pick for next year and their second-round pick for 2025. Wide receiver D.J. Moore was also added to the deal.
The Athletic points out it’s still possible that the Raiders draft a quarterback in the first round of this year’s draft as they could still get one they like at No.7, though it’s unlikely that they do so.
