The Las Vegas Raiders have released a veteran quarterback ahead of 2024 NFL free agency that begins next Wednesday.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Raiders have released veteran journeyman quarterback Brian Hoyer. The 38-year-old and longtime backup of Tom Brady in New England had one year remaining on his rookie deal.
Hoyer was the Raiders’ third-stringer behind fellow 2023 free agent signing Jimmy Garoppolo and rookie Aidan O’Connell. Hoyer made one start and appeared in three games altogether, completing 54.8 percent of pass attempts for 231 yards, zero touchdowns and three interceptions.
The well-traveled Hoyer is one of the NFL’s longest-tenured players, having just finished his 15th season in the league. He has spent most of that time in New England over three stints, winning a Super Bowl 53 ring as Brady’s understudy in the 2018 season.
The Raiders are also widely expected to release Garoppolo at some point after he lost his starting job midway through the season to O’Connell. The Raiders have been linked to LSU’s Jayden Daniels in the draft, though they could end up signing a veteran QB like Russell Wilson or Ryan Tannehill to compete with O’Connell for the starting job.

Hoyer has appeared in 79 games over his career, making 41 starts. He’s 16-25-0 as a starter with 10,899 passing yards, 53 touchdowns and 37 interceptions. Hoyer was the main starter for the Cleveland Browns and Houston Texans in 2014 and 2015, respectively.
