The Los Angeles Chargers already have one of football’s best receiving duos in Mike Williams and Keenan Allen, but that may not stop them from adding another playmaking pass-catcher.
General manager Tom Telesco has been relatively quiet thus far in free agency, but the Chargers will have the chance to add another impact player when they pick 21st overall in next month’s draft (Apr. 27-29 in Kansas City).
Speaking to Kenneth Teape of NFL Analysis Network, one NFL scout stated that the Bolts are eyeing one of the top 2023 wide receiver draft prospects in Zay Flowers of Boston College:
“One player to keep a very close eye on for the Chargers is Boston College receiver, Zay Flowers. L.A. wants to add more playmaking for Herbert and are very strongly interested in him.”
Flowers is widely projected to be a mid-to-late first-round draft choice. The speedy 5-foot-10 wideout pieced together his best collegiate season in 2022, recording 78 receptions for 1,077 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Many expected the Chargers to release Allen in a cap-saving move, but the decision was made to retain the veteran star. The soon-to-be 31-year-old missed seven games last season but finished with 66 catches for 752 yards and four touchdowns.
The Chargers are coming off the franchise’s first playoff berth in four seasons. However, the season ended in heartbreaking fashion against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Super Wild Card Weekend.
