Kyler Murray is being compared to the likes of JaMarcus Russell after the team had to put a clause into his new deal about independent study. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the language of the deal requires Murray must study four hours per game week outside of his usual team duties.
That is a shocking clause for a QB you just paid to be the future of the franchise. This should be something he was already doing to begin with.
Arizona sports reporter Sarah Kezele pointed to a quote from last year where Murray described himself as someone who’s “not one of those guys that’s going to sit there and kill myself watching film.”
Murray said back in 2021 that he could visualize what was going on during games thanks to great cognitive skills. Because of that, he thought he did not need to watch a lot of film.
Clearly, the team disagreed.
“I think I was blessed with the cognitive skills to just go out there and just see it before it happens,” Murray told the New York Times in 2021. “I’m not one of those guys that’s going to sit there and kill myself watching film. I don’t sit there for 24 hours and break down this team and that team and watch every game because, in my head, I see so much.”

It makes you wonder if Murray will be watching the clock as he watches film and stops as soon as he hits the four-hour mark.
Fans are connecting the Murray study clause to the case of Oakland Raiders draft pick JaMarcus Russell. The No. 1 pick in 2007 was suspected of skipping tape study when his staff sent him home with DVDs of game-planning material. When they gave him a blank DVD, he claimed he studied the packages on them.
Murray recently signed a five-year, $230.5 million contract with $160 million guaranteed, the third-highest total value and the second-highest guarantee in NFL history.
