Quarterback Kyler Murray signed a five-year, $230.5 million contract extension in 2022. That deal will officially begin in 2024. However, will he actually be abe to finish out that contract while remaining in town?
Could the Arizona Cardinals trade Kyler Murray? NFL trade speculation is swirling around that possibility before the start of the 2023 NFL season.
The Arizona Cardinals are in a difficult position. In 2022, they finished with an underwhelming 4-13 record and then proceeded to lose several key players like wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, defensive ends JJ Watt and Zach Allen, cornerback Byron Murphy, and guard Justin Pugh.
There are still talented individual players on this roster such as Pro Bowl safety Budda Baker and deep-threat wide receiver Marquise Brown, but they lack a lot everywhere else that has experts thinking they should make a move now to get as many draft picks for a huge rebuild.
Jakob Ashlin of FanSided believes that the Patriots are the best landing spot for Murray.
“This one is a no-brainer. The Patriots will boast a league-high $82.9 million in 2024 cap space.”
The article points out that Mac Jones had a great season in his rookie year but took a major stepback in his second season.

“Nevertheless, 2023 will be a monumental year for his future with the Patriots. If he underperforms, the front office can be aggressive next offseason and target a big-name quarterback. Murray’s athleticism and speed give him a higher ceiling than Jones. If the Patriots want to move into contention, they could roll the dice and take a big swing by trading for Murray.”
Either 13-year veteran Colt McCoy or rookie Clayton Tune will lead the Arizona Cardinals at quarterback until Kyler Murray returns from a torn ACL suffered last December.
The Cardinals’ quarterback told reporters on July 29 that he’s taking it “one day at a time.” There is no timetable for his return.
Murray underwent successful reconstructive surgery on Jan. 3 to repair his ACL and meniscus in his right knee. He suffered the non-contact injury during a regular season game against the New England Patriots.
Many NFL writers think that the Cardinals are going to struggle this year. Really struggle. That struggle could lead to a very high 2024 NFL Draft pick.
The team also has the rights to the Houston Texans’ first-round draft pick in next year’s draft and many also predict that the Texans will have a rough year despite the many moves they have made in the offseason.
The Cardinals could come away loaded with talent if they play their cards right.
