A massive trade proposal has the Arizona Cardinals trading quarterback Kyler Murray to one of their main rivals.
Last year, Arizona handed the No. 1 selection of the 2019 NFL Draft a five-year contract extension worth $230.5 million. Murray is still recovering from a torn ACL he suffered last December, and it’s unclear when he’ll return to action.
On top of that, many expect the Cardinals to be in position to draft one of the many top quarterback prospects in next year’s class. This includes USC’s Caleb Williams, Texas’ Quinn Ewers and UNC’s Drake Mays.
If the Cardinals indeed finish at or near the bottom of the standings next year, could they look to move on from their starting quarterback? If so, it’ll be interesting to see just how many teams have genuine interest in trading for Murray.
FanSided’s Jakob Ashlin analyzed five potential landing spots for Arizona’s quarterback. Among them: One of the Cardinals’ archrivals in the Los Angeles Rams:
“From Jalen Ramsey to Matthew Stafford, the Rams love making splashy trades.
Stafford struggled with injuries in 2022. In nine games, he posted an 87.4 quarterback rating, which was his lowest single-season mark since 2014. Entering his 15th NFL season, there are longevity concerns for the Super Bowl Champion, but with four years left on his deal, the Rams could have a difficult time moving on from the veteran.
If Stafford underperforms in 2023, the Rams could look to make a move at quarterback. A Rams trade could be the most appealing option for the Cardinals. If they take back Stafford’s contract in the deal, they could persuade the Rams to offer them higher draft compensation.”

Of course, there’s no guarantee that a) the Rams would want Murray’s contract and b) Arizona would be willing to take back Stafford’s deal in return. But Ashlin’s trade proposal is certainly enticing here, and it does make sense if LA is set on moving on from Stafford.
If Stafford stays healthy and rebounds from an injury-riddled and frustrating 2022 season, then all Murray-to-LA trade talks will be silenced. But if Sean McVay and company want to restart at the game’s most important position in 2024, and if Arizona makes Murray available, this trade could definitely work for both clubs.
