San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is expected to make attempts to fill his vacant defensive coordinator post with a former NFL coach.
Shanahan fired Steve Wilks following the team’s Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs and is now looking to replace him.
While there’s not much in the way of news on potential replacements, NBC’s Peter King reckons the Niners HC could try to proposition two of the NFL’s most successful coaches over the last 15 years.
“An interesting candidate would be Pete Carroll,” King said on 97.5 The Game’s ‘Willard & Dibs’. “It’s a defense he’s extraordinarily familiar with…I wouldn’t be shocked if Kyle picked up the phone and asked Belichick and Carroll if this is something they’d be interested in.”
Given Carroll’s lengthy stint with the Seattle Seahawks, it’s hard to imagine him wanting to work for the 49ers. As for Belichick, he’d probably prefer taking a year off and waiting for a head coaching vacancy over what would be an embarrassing demotion at such a stage in his career.
Still, the above hardly means Shanahan shouldn’t at least try. What’s the worst that can happen?
