Trey Lance started for the San Francisco 49ers in their preseason opener, with Brock Purdy still working his way back from surgery.
The former No. 3 overall pick did not have the best game, having played the first half before Sam Darnold came on for the second and Brandon Allen wrapped things up. The offense stuttered to get out of the blocks on Sunday, going for three straight three-and-out drives before scoring a touchdown in the 34-7 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders.
A wild theory has since emerged that claims head coach Kyle Shanahan purposely called unfamiliar plays for Lance so he would bomb as an impressive performance would likely cause fans to call for a start for the QB.
Shanahan, though, did not put all of the blame on Lance as he claimed the entire offense should take responsibility
“It got off to a rough start for everybody. I don’t put all that on Trey,” the HC insisted. “I mean, three three-and-outs for the whole offense the first three times, so I don’t put that all on Trey by any means. I thought the whole offense was sloppy to start.”
Lance, who went 10-of-15, disagreed. The signal-caller shouldered all of the blame after throwing for 112 yards and getting sacked four times.

He’s going to have a tough time convincing anyone he should start over Purdy once Mr. Irrelevant is back from injury. But that his coach purposely set him up to fail is probably a bit of a stretch.
