The San Francisco 49ers suffered their first loss of the season on Sunday as they got toppled by the Cleveland Browns in surprising fashion.
The 19-17 defeat came as a result of Jake Moody’s missed field goal. However, the Niners had key players in Deebo Samuel and Christian McCaffery go off, while Trent Williams played through some pain after hurting his ankle.
Samuel is dealing with a shoulder issue that saw him ruled out of the game in the first quarter. McCaffrey would exit in the third and return but was ruled out in the fourth.
The running back got off to a good start and scored a touchdown to mark the 15th straight game in which he’s scored, although he finished with his lowest yardage total (52) since Week 11 of last season.
McCaffrey was initially reported to have suffered an oblique injury but, following the game, head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed there’s also rib damage. Shanahan couldn’t speak to the severity.

“49ers HC Kyle Shanahan did not yet have an update on the severity of injuries to RB Christian McCaffrey and WR Deebo Samuel,” Nick Wagoner of ESPN noted. “Shanahan did say McCaffrey is dealing with an oblique AND rib injury.”
McCaffrey has scored seven touchdowns so far this season and has been a huge part of the Niners’ success. They will hope to have him back ASAP.
