The Jimmy Garoppolo era in San Francisco lasted one more than it was supposed to after he suddenly signed a one-year deal to return to the team, but as a backup to Trey Lance. Well, Lance got hurt and Jimmy G was thrust back into the starting job.
Garoppolo ended up starting 10 games after Trey Lance was injured but saw his own season ended with a fractured foot in Week 13.
This time around, Jimmy Garoppolo might be on the outs with the San Francisco 49ers organization. According to The Athletic via Dov Kleiman, the relationship between the two “seems to have gone a bit south” in the leadup to last week’s NFC Championship Game.
Kyle Shanahan ruled out Jimmy Garoppolo‘s return.
“No, I don’t see any scenario of that,” Shanahan said, via video from the team.
Garoppolo is scheduled for free agency in March.

In his 49ers career, Garoppolo led the 49ers to two NFC Championship Games and a Super Bowl. A healthy Jimmy G was likely going to do the same this season as well. Since being in San Fran since 2017, injuries have limited Jimmy G to just 57 games played.
If the 49ers have Brock Purdy back in six months, along with a healthy Lance, they will not seek a veteran starter.
“No, we’re content enough,” Shanahan said. “I know we have two starters on our team right now that I believe we can win with. So when you have that situation, you’re not that eager to go looking around.”
