Kyle Shanahan has fired back at Jimmy Garopollo following his former quarterback’s comments pertaining to the recent Trey Lance trade.
While the Niners have been one of the most successful NFL franchises for the most part, they haven’t exactly showered themselves in glory in recent times and have experienced lots of difficulty at the quarterback position. They’ll hope to find some stability with Brock Purdy following his breakout season in 2022 but won’t soon live down their disastrous dealings where Lance is concerned.
San Francisco gave up a lot to get the No. 3 pick they used on the QB in 2021 and it’s safe to say that the gamble did not work out given that he fell to third on the depth chart before being shipped to Dallas.
“Weird situation. Been a lot of weird situations over there in San Francisco, I’ll just leave it at that, but I’m happy Trey got another shot,” Garoppolo told SI Now’s Robin Lundberg on the trade.
“How do you think San Francisco has handled those quarterback situations?” Lundberg asked.
“How do you think they’ve handled them?” Jimmy replied laughing.

“I think it’s been messy, I’ll put it that way,” Lundberg noted.
“Yeah, that’s a nice way to put it,” Garoppolo replied.
Asked about the comments, Shanahan gave quite a detailed explanation.
“We waited 10 weeks. Made a trade for a quarterback (Jimmy Garoppolo). He played five games and then we made him the highest-paid quarterback of all time, at the time,” The Niners HC said.
“Then he played two of the next five years and did really good in those two years. His injuries for three of those five years were legit. It was rough on him, rough on us.
“Then we made a move to go to a younger quarterback (Trey Lance). We thought he would be ready in two years and he wasn’t. And now we have a different younger quarterback. So, that’s the situation.”
A fair assessment, right?
