San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is set to lead his team out against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 5, having booted them out of the playoffs last season.
But, this time around, the Cowboys are the ones who are going into the game with Trey Lance on their roster.
While Lance is unlikely to feature in the game, he will be contributing in other ways as Dallas offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer has said that the team plans to use the quarterback’s knowledge of the Niners’s systems to come up with a plan for Sunday’s showdown.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the game, Shanahan joked he hopes the Cowboys spend all of their time planning with Lance instead of watching film, although he admitted his former QB should have a wealth of knowledge to share.
“As much as most coaches can, I mean, you can see the plays on tape,” he pointed out. “You can explain what we look at and stuff like that, which usually you can when you can stack up a lot of tape over years and we’ve been here for a while.
“Hopefully, he’s [Lance] talking to them all the time and making them focus totally on that instead of the simple stuff of watching the tape.”

Lance was traded to the Cowboys earlier this year after being named the Niners’ third-string QB, having entered the NFL as the third-overall pick in 2021. He will hope to get his career back on track in Dallas but will have to bide his time as he’s third-string over there too.
