J.J. Watt shocked the entire NFL world when he took to social media and announced he’d be retiring at the conclusion of this season. The fans weren’t the only ones shocked by this.
According to a new report this afternoon, he apparently surprised his own team as well.
As he spoke to reporters on Wednesday, Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury stated he and the team had “no idea” Watt would announce his retirement when he did.
“Happy for him; he seems like he’s in a really good place,” Kingsbury told reporters. “We had no idea that that was coming, but what a tremendous player, person and all-time greatest. To see him play the way he played the other night and then hear that. I think it’s just a special time for him, the organization, the entire NFL to kind of celebrate him these last two weeks.”
After the next two games, Watt will leave the NFL after 12 seasons as one of the top defensive ends in the league’s history. He was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year three times. He may be going out as a Cardinal, but he made his name with the Houston Texans.
