Kirk Herbstreit has come under fire for something he said about Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy this week.
The Commanders shockingly lost to the Chicago Bears on Thursday night to become the team against which they snapped a 14-game losing streak dating back to last October.
Herbstreit called the game for Prime Video alongside Al Michaels and, at some point, would note that Bieniemy needed to step out of Andy Reid’s shadow in KC in order to land a head coaching job.
Other television personalities, as well as fans, took exception to the comment for obvious reasons.
“Ah yes, Kirk, all ‘OCs under offensive minded Head Coaches have to go do their own thing’ to get a HC job,” Nick Wright of FOX posted on X. “Except for, of course, McVay’s coaches (O’Connell, Taylor, LaFleur), Shanahan’s (McDaniel), Sirianni’s (Steichen) and Andy Reid’s, pre-Bienemy (Nagy, Pederson)…”

Sure, that actually was what happened in Bieniemy’s case. He did leave the Chiefs so he could eventually earn himself a head coaching job. But Herbstreit could have done a better job with the semantics here as other individuals have gone on to do so after working under Reid.
