An enticing trade proposal has the New England Patriots acquiring a veteran signal-caller in an effort to save their season.
At 1-3, the Patriots’ playoff hopes are already in serious jeopardy. The sluggish offense is the main reason behind the slow start, as the Mac Jones-led group has averaged a woeful 13.8 points per game (30th in the league).
Many wonder if head coach Bill Belichick is on the hot seat, as New England is headed towards a third losing season in four years and a fifth straight campaign without a playoff victory. Could all of the building pressure prompt Belichick to upgrade at the game’s most important position?
Bleacher Report’s Ryan Fowler proposed a blockbuster trade idea that has New England acquiring Kirk Cousins from the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for a 2024 second and a 2025 fourth-round draft choice:
“With the most cap space available of any team in 2024, the Patriots have the finances to give Kirk Cousins an extension to be their starting quarterback for several years.
Mac Jones doesn’t look to be the answer right now for head coach Bill Belichick, and losing simply doesn’t exist in the DNA of the future Hall of Famer.
With a similar skill set to that of Jones—both make their money inside of structure—Cousins’ transition period could be seamless within Bill O’Brien’s offense.”
Cousins gets his fair share of criticism, but his consistent production speaks for itself. The 35-year-old is third in passing yards (1,214) and first in passing touchdowns (11) through the first four weeks of 2023.

With all due respect to Jones, Cousins would most certainly give New England a much-needed upgrade at QB. He led a mediocre Washington team to winning seasons in 2015 and 2016, including an NFC East division title in the former year.
This is the type of move Belichick should strongly consider in order to save the Patriots’ season. Of course, the Cousins-to-New-England suggestion becomes a moot point if Jones can somehow turn his season around.
