If you happen to be both superstitious and a fan of either the San Francisco 49ers or Green Bay Packers, then look away now.
That’s because if history repeats itself, then neither the 49ers nor the Packers will be playing in Super Bowl 58 in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Feb. 11. Allow us to explain more clearly.
As noted by the @IMissWinning X/Twitter account, no NFL team has lost to Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins AND reached the Super Bowl in the same year. And among the final eight remaining teams, the 49ers and the Packers are the only clubs that lost to Cousins this year.
Sports Illustrated’s Jonathan Harrison did a deep dive into Cousins’ career dating back to his rookie 2012 season to fact-check the Cousins Super Bowl curse. And it’s indeed true.
Some fans may recall that Cousins led Washington to a victory over the eventual Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens in Week 14 of the 2012 season. But Robert Griffin III actually started that game before leaving with an injury, so he actually got credit for the win.

In that game, Cousins only had to attempt two passes (for 26 yards) and a touchdown in a 31-28 victory. With Griffin receiving credit for the win, the Ravens don’t qualify for the strange-but-true Cousins stat here.
So if history holds up again this year, the winner of the Packers-49ers game will just end up losing to the Detroit Lions or Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC Championship Game anyway.
