Intentional or not, the Minnesota Vikings immediately put Kirk Cousins’ name into nonstop trade speculation when they opted against extending him this past offseason.
The 35-year-old Cousins will need something close to a career year in order to convince the Vikings to extend him. Though his stats have been fine thus far, Minnesota is sitting near the bottom of the NFC with a 1-3 record.
If Minnesota is out of the playoff race leading up to the trade deadline, it only makes sense for them to deal Cousins as opposed to watching him leave for nothing in 2024 free agency.
Several playoff hopefuls could use Cousins, but perhaps no team makes more sense as a potential landing spot than the New York Jets.
The Jets (1-3) are struggling without star quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who suffered a torn Achilles just minutes into his New York debut back in Week 1. There’s still plenty of talent on the roster for the Jets to compete, so Robert Saleh and company should definitely be open to the idea of acquiring a temporary option to keep them in the postseason race.
So if Minnesota puts Cousins on the trade block, the Jets should place a call and offer two draft picks for the four-time Pro Bowler.

Keeping in mind that the Jets’ 2024 second-rounder will go to the Green Bay Packers as part of the Rodgers trade, New York should offer a 2024 fourth-round pick and a conditional 2025 third-rounder that will become a second-round choice if he leads the Jets to the playoffs.
By trading Cousins, the Vikings put themselves in good position to get a top five or 10 pick to draft one of the top quarterbacks prospects in next year’s class, and Cousins would keep the Jets competitive for one season until Rodgers returns in 2024. It’s a win-win move for both sides.
