With the NFC and AFC Championship games being played this weekend, the NFL off season is just around the corner. Teams will look to improve their rosters through free agency and the draft and the quarterback position is always the point of emphasis for teams who don’t currently have a franchise player at the position.
One quarterback that will be an intriguing name to watch this Spring is Kirk Cousins. Cousins has spent the last six seasons with the Minnesota Vikings putting up very solid numbers in the regular season and has been selected to three Pro Bowls. However, Cousins is coming off surgery to repair a torn achilles and will be turning 36 before the beginning of next season.
One former NFL executive named a surprise dark-horse team that he believes that Cousins would be a good fit for and that team is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
“I think Kirk Cousins is going to have a much larger market than many expect. I’m going to throw out a sleeper team to watch. Don’t be shocked if the Tampa Bay Buccaneers take a long look at him,” said the former NFL executive.
This past season the Buccaneers took a chance on former #1 overall pick Baker Mayfield as their starter and he rewarded them by having a career year. Mayfield set new career highs in passing yards with 4,044, passing touchdowns with 28 and led the Bucs to a division title and a wild-card victory over the defending NFC Champion Philadelphia Eagles.
Mayfield played last year on a one-year contract and will no doubt be looking for a large payday after the best season of his career to date. If the Bucs decide to move on from Baker, then Cousins will definitely be a quarterback that should be on their radar.
