The first round of the 2024 NFL Draft had a lot of quarterbacks taken in the top ten. Some were expected to go, such as USC’s Caleb Williams at number one to the Bears, while others weren’t at all, like Michael Penix Jr at eight by Atlanta Falcons.
After the Falcons’ recent signing of former Pro Bowl QB Kirk Cousins to a four-year contract to assumably star for the team, many assumed the team would go with a more team-needed pick like a defensive lineman. That wasn’t the case.
Atlanta came up on the clock at number eight and picked up Washington Huskies signal-caller Michael Penix Jr. Many of their fans and players had questions. According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Cousins understands the “business of football” while stating that he “was surprised” that this pick happened. And now, we have a statement from Cousin’s agent.
According to Thamel, Cousin’s agent, Mike McCartney, is reportedly frustrated with the Falcons for not telling their camp anything before taking the Washington Huskie QB with the number eight overall pick.
Thamel posted to X stating that they had no idea that Penix was going to be a Falcon until he received a “call while the team was on the clock.”

Could Michael Penix Jr. Take Kirk Cousins’ Job In Year One With The Falcons
With everyone in Cousins’ camp reportedly frustrated with the Falcons’ front office, there are many questions about what the Falcons may do in the upcoming 2024 season with two startable signal callers on the roster.
To answer the question, even though there is much frustration directed at the Falcons for not taking a weapon to aid Cousins, he will start for the upcoming season, as Penix Jr. will reportedly sit behind the 34-year-old quarterback until his contract runs out.
The Falcons were widely criticized for being a quarterback away from contending for a Super Bowl, and now we know that they heard everyone, as they now have two good quarterbacks on the roster. What will happen over the next few years in the Falcons’ QB room? Only time will tell.
