Kansas City mayor Quinton Lucas has made a statement following the tragic shooting incident that took place during the Chiefs parade.
Mayhem broke out nearing the end of Wednesday’s festivities on Wednesday as gunmen opened fire on a crowd, resulting in one person getting killed while 10-15 more are believed to have sustained various injuries.
Two people have been arrested in connection with the shooting.
Lucas has addressed the shocking development, also noting that the Chiefs have informed him that all players, coaches, and staff are accounted for and are safe.
“We went out today, like everyone in Kansas City, looking to have a celebration. That celebration was marred by a shooting,” he said (H/T ProFootballTalk). “This is absolutely a tragedy, the likes of which we never would have expected in Kansas City.”
Lucas must have been close enough to the shooting as he saw officers running towards the suspects.

“I’m heartbroken,” he continued. “I was there with my wife, I was there with my mother, we never would have thought that we, along with Chiefs players, along with fans, hundreds of thousands of people, would be forced to run for our safety.”
The parade was manned by 600 Kansas City police officers, as well as 250 officers from other agencies.
“Officers ran toward danger,” Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves said.
One fan is also being hailed as a hero after risking his life to chase down and tackle one of the gunmen to the ground in an act of bravery.
