All is not right in Kansas City even after the team won their last game and clinched the AFC West for the 8th consecutive year.
The Chiefs played five games in December and won two of them. It was unlike them. The team scored under 20 points in all three losses and even when they did score over 20, the offense still did not look good.
The team lost to the Green Bay Packers on December 3rd, the Buffalo Bills on December 10th, defeated the New England Patriots on December 17th, lost to the Las Vegas Raiders on Christmas, and won against the Cincinnati Bengals on New Year’s Eve.
Chiefs radio play-by-play announcer Mitch Holthus thinks he knows why the team struggled so badly and he gave his compelling argument on Monday.
“NO team should face a schedule like @Chiefs had in 2023 where 5 consecutive opponents IN DECEMBER had extra days to rest and prep- from 10 days to 14 days to 11 days etc,” Holthus tweeted.
“I get networks want ‘their’ slot to have best teams but this has to be discussed going forward! According to Warren Sharp this hasn’t happened to a team in 35 years.”

Week 13: Packers – 10 days
Week 14: Buffalo Bills – 14 days (bye in Week 13)
Week 15: Patriots – 10 days
Week 16: Raiders – 11 days
Week 17: Bengals – 8 days rest
That streak finally ends when they face the Los Angeles Chargers in week 18.
Kansas City Chiefs could rest starters in Week 18 with the NFL playoffs AFC 3 seed locked in. They have no shot at the No. 1 seed which means they will have one home game and will likely see Patrick Mahomes in his first away playoff game of his career.
