After all of the offseason talk, Kadarius Toney threw up a memorable stinker in the Chiefs’ opener vs. the Lions on Thursday night.
The wide receiver played an important role in KC’s Super Bowl win last season, making some crucial plays late in the game to help them secure a victory over the Eagles. However, he’s now thought to be the reason they’ve lost their first game of the 2023 campaign as the defending champs are 0-1 after a 21-20 result.
Toney, who missed most of the Chiefs’ summer work recovering from a knee injury, dropped three passes on the night, with one of them leading to a pick-six as the ball bounced off his hands and was snatched out of the air by safety Brian Branch, who would return it for 50 yards to tie the game 14-all in the third quarter.
It appears he has deactivated his Twitter/X account on the back of the performance, having trended for all the wrong reasons as fans really got on his back.
Patrick Mahomes has offered a public vote of confidence in spite of the costly mistakes.
“Stuff’s not always going to go your way, obviously. He would’ve wanted to catch a few of those in the game,” the quarterback said, per the Kansas City Star.
“But I have trust that he’s gonna be that guy that I go to in those crucial moments, and he’s gonna make the catch and win us some seasons like he did last year. So we’re gonna continue to work him in, get him more and more reps, and I’m sure those drops will kind of disappear.”

Toney wasn’t the only one who dropped catches against Detroit, though.
Head coach Andy Reid admitted that the team needs to fix their receiving issues given the “unusual showing.” Fortunately, they’re likely to have Travis Kelce back by the time they play the Jaguars next weekend.
