Justin Herbert is expected to be the next QB to get paid like crazy.
The Los Angeles Chargers quarterback is still on his rookie deal after being drafted sixth overall in 2020. Herbert is now eligible for a contract extension after completing his third NFL season.
His extension does not necessarily have to get done this offseason as he is under contract for the 2023 season.
However, there is a new report that is projecting Herbert to sign a deal that would have him with 6 years and $295 million, with $135 million guaranteed.
If they wanted to, the Chargers could keep Herbert under team control for an additional four seasons without agreeing to a long-term extension, using the fifth-year team option in 2024 and the franchise tag for the ensuing three seasons.
They are unlikely to do that.

Expectations were high for Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert entering his third season. Herbert posted another strong season in 2022, completing 68.2% of his passes for 4,739 yards, the second-most passing yards in the NFL behind only Patrick Mahomes.
However, the team flamed out in the playoffs when they squandered away a 27-0 lead in their Super Wild Card Weekend showdown with the Jaguars. They would go on to suffer a heartbreaking 31-30 loss to Jacksonville.
Herbert was named an alternate for the AFC in the 2023 Pro Bowl Games, but he had to miss it as he recovers from shoulder surgery.
