The Chicago Bears’ horrendous 0-3 start to the 2023 season has already led to speculation that the team may look to trade quarterback Justin Fields.
The 24-year-old Fields has completed just 58 percent of his pass attempts for 526 yards, three touchdowns and four interceptions. Fields, who rushed for 1,143 yards last year, has just 109 yards on the ground.
Many football fans, analysts and writers wonder if the Bears will trade Fields this season. They’re in position to get a top-three pick in the 2024 NFL Draft which is loaded with top quarterback prospects, after all.
Arthur Smith’s Atlanta Falcons have been mentioned as a possible suitor for Fields. NFL.com’s David Carr even made the case for the 2-1 Falcons to make a trade for the ex-Ohio State Buckeyes’ star amid the inconsistent play of starter Desmond Ridder:
“I will say I don’t really see a world where Falcons backup Taylor Heinicke is a better option, simply because he isn’t built for the system. A lot of what Atlanta does offensively involves the quarterback being part of the run game, and that’s not Heinicke’s strength — though he proved he can provide a spark to an offense during his time in Washington. But, you know who would be great in Atlanta …
Justin Fields.
Sure, Fields has struggled with the Bears this fall. I’m not saying Ridder can’t play well in Atlanta, or that Chicago would trade Fields, but I believe Fields is perfectly suited to unlock the explosive element the Falcons’ offense is missing right now. After seeing the tumult in Chicago early this season, I’m seriously considering picking up the phone if I’m Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot.”

Fields unquestionably has the talent to be a great quarterback in this league, but the Bears simply aren’t putting him in a good position to succeed. There’s definitely good reason to think that a dual-threat QB of his caliber would finally break out under a strong offensive-minded head coach like Smith.
