Justin Fields’ play up to this point for the Chicago Bears has left a lot to be desired. And unsurprisingly, the front office reportedly isn’t fully sold on him as a long-term option.
According to Jay Glazer of FOX Sports (h/t Timothy Rapp of Bleacher Report), the Bears haven’t yet decided if they view Fields as “their quarterback of the future.” Glazer added that the 2021 first-round pick “has a ways to go” in persuading the Bears that he’s their guy.
“Right now, the jury’s still out whether he’s their quarterback of the future. And he had a little bumpy ride this week with their coaches.
What they’re gonna do for him this week, however, is have a lot more designed runs for him and a lot more plays where he’s rolling out of the pocket to throw. But they also told him, look, if you don’t see anything after your first ands second reads, just throw the ball. But Justin Fields still has a ways to go to convince the Chicago Bears that he’s their quarterback of the future.”
The Bears traded up via the New York Giants in 2021 so they could take Fields 11th overall. Chicago even gave up its 2022 first-rounder as part of the package to get the Ohio State product, but the investment has not panned out thus far.
Entering Sunday’s road contest against the Kansas City Chiefs, Fields had a woeful career record of 5-22-0 with a 59.8 completion percentage and 26 touchdowns against 24 interceptions. Fields dazzled as a runner last year, racking up 1,143 yards and eight rushing scores.
But the dual-threat QB hasn’t been able to produce in any way here in 2023. Even the arrival of star wideout D.J. Moore has done nothing to improve Fields’ game as a passer.

The 2024 NFL Draft class is loaded with promising quarterbacks, namely USC’s Caleb Williams, North Carolina’s Drake Maye, Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. and Texas’ Quinn Ewers. So if Fields doesn’t pick it up soon, the Bears’ front office should start heavily scouting 2024 QB prospects.
